four rooms of change
Making sense of how people experience and respond to change.
the concept
The Four Rooms of Change is a simple but powerful framework developed by Claes Janssen to help people understand how individuals and teams typically respond to change. It recognises that change is rarely a straightforward process and that people often move through different emotional and psychological states before reaching acceptance and renewal.
Rather than viewing reactions to change as resistance or compliance, the model encourages us to explore a deeper understanding of what people may be experiencing and why.
when I use it
I use the Four Rooms of Change when supporting organisations, teams and leaders through periods of transition, uncertainty or transformation. It provides a practical way of exploring the human side of change and creates a shared language for discussing experiences that can otherwise be difficult to articulate.
It is particularly valuable when people are trying to make sense of what is changing, how it is affecting them and what might help them move forward.
what it helps unlock
The framework helps people recognise that their response to change is often both normal and shared by others. This awareness can reduce frustration, increase empathy and create more constructive conversations about what support, communication or action may be needed.
For leaders, it also provides valuable insight into how different individuals and teams may be experiencing the same change in very different ways.
worth exploring if…
Change is creating uncertainty, frustration or mixed reactions across a team. People appear stuck, disengaged or reluctant to move forward despite good intentions and clear plans. Or perhaps you want a more human and practical way of understanding how people experience change, rather than focusing solely on processes, plans and milestones.
